I bought this new from Exotic Sheepskins USA in Spring of 2017. I have had it laid across the back of our sitting room couch, so it is still in excellent condition. There are a couple markings/discolorations on the skin side, and the original tag from Exotic Sheepskins indicating the size & identification number. The top, fur side is still in excellent condition like how it was when I first got it earlier this year, with a small area where the hair is shorter Exotic Sheepskins is a small, Michigan based, family owned business, who supports the positive nature of their products with sustainable, humane, and eco-friendly practices.
"Eco-friendly" vegetable tanning uses safe, Environmentally friendly, natural, non-carcinogenic tannins rather than cheaper tanning solutions & processes. Vegetable tanned European Sheepskins have no chemical odor and the wool & skin both remain soft and pleasing for years. Exotic Sheepskins sources all of their sheepskins from 5 suppliers in Poland and Denmark, and all 5 use sustainable, humane, non-carcinogenic, and eco-friendly practices & products, and finish the eco tanning process by washing them in a mild detergent.
KNOW WHERE YOUR LEATHER & FUR PRODUCTS COME FROM & HOW THEY ARE MADE Knowing where your fur/leather product comes from and how it was made, weighing the pros & cons to your individual needs & opinions is very important. Cheap and fast to market sheepskins, and any fur/leather item for that matter, be It a rug, a fur vest, a fur pillow, purse, etc, like products mass produced in China, are cheap & mass produced fast to the market for a reason. They typically use cheap & synthetic solutions in their tanning process, creating a higher, detrimental cost to the environment, a foul odor, these cheap products can & usually do shed, the skin side is often tougher & unevenly finished, and result in an end product that is not of good quality. Repeated skin exposure can & do sensitize many people into developing life-long serious allergies. Is an unusually cheap price really worth having an obvious poor quality product that may potentially cause you or one of your loved ones health issues in the future?
I myself collect furs of all kinds, from silver fox pelts to hats, earmuffs, pillows, purses, and Icelandic sheepskin rugs in particular, I have smaller throws & large 8x8 foot rugs. I bought an Icelandic sheepskin small rug & pillow from China, some fox tails, a fox pelt, a fox purse, earmuffs, and collar, and each piece has been a complete & utter disappointment. The density, softness, and overall appearance and quality were not even worth the cheap prices I paid, and I had to air most of them out & drench them in Febreeze & Ozium odor eliminators. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SHEEPSKIN For centuries, sheep farmers and country folk have known that no natural or man-made fiber possesses the virtues of 100% sheepskin. The unique combination of leather skin on one side and wool fur on the other lends it remarkable properties. Cool in Summer and Warm in the Winter Sheepskin wool is soft and resilient. Its fibers breathe, acting like a natural thermostat for your body. These hollow fibers can absorb up to 30% of their own weight in moisture without feeling wet, keeping you perfectly dry regardless of the weather. Sheepskin is so beautifully natural and it compliments any living space, whether at your bedside or to soften wooden or tiled floor areas, placed on chairs for a wrapped around feel of comfort, pet bed, they effortlessly make a space look inviting. An Icelandic sheepskin rug is a source of comfort, beauty, and good feelings. They are super thick, warm and sooo soft underfoot - perfect addition to any room. For people with back issues, it is absolutely heavenly to sleep on. S actually recommend them to back pain patients! Ounce for ounce, sheepskin is stronger than steel. Your sheepskin items will last for years with minimal care: most often, only brushing, shaking out, or vacuuming is required. Impossible to copy synthetically, sheepskin and its wool fibers offer an astounding list of natural qualities. Wool is considered by the medical profession to be non-allergy. Sheepskin is a natural insulator, and draws perspiration away from the wearer and into the fibers. There, it traps between 30 and 36 percent of its own weight in moisture. Shearling sheepskin is great for any season. It keeps you cool during the summer and warm in wintertime, because of the breathing property of the wools hollow fibers.
It is always comfortable because it is extremely soft, and it provides a comfortable cushion of air that acts as a temperature insulator. High quality sheepskin does not shed, because it's attached to the skin. It isn't woven and then brushed up, like wool pile fabric that is loose enough to be pulled out or worn off. Sheepskin wool is embedded into the leather.
Resists snags, tears, wrinkles, soiling and pilling. Drapes beautifully; never sags and retains shape. Stays warm even when wet. Is a natural moisturizer due to the high content of lanolin in the wool. The seeded skin side is naturally water resistant.
Sheepskin is a Recycled Byproduct. A sheepskin pelt is only one of many byproducts of the sheep farming industry. This byproduct of the food and wool industry is tanned and used in many wonderful ways rather than being discarded. At the end of a sheep's life, nothing is wasted. The whole animal is used, including bones and hooves. Sheepskin, like wood, is one of the few raw materials that nature will never exhaust. Its value as both a food source and a production material is therefore both aesthetic and ecological SHEEPSKIN CARE Though wool is a springy fiber, after long use it may tend to mat down a bit. To restore the pile to its original state, brush it up with a coarse brush. The coarser the brush the better. Wire brushes work best and do not harm the fleece. Wool fleece is a natural fiber and resists soiling, this simplifying cleaning. In most cases spot cleaning in place with warm water and mild soap is all that is needed.
